Following extensive deliberations among structural engineers, architects, project owners, and construction specialists, carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthening was identified as the optimal solution.

Carbon Fiber Sheet Reinforcement of a Resort Columns

Project Overview

Having been operational for several decades, the resort underwent comprehensive structural assessment. Findings revealed that prolonged exposure to environmental elements and extended service life beyond the design lifespan had induced material degradation in the columns. Specifically, concrete carbonation and steel reinforcement corrosion emerged as the primary degradation mechanisms. These issues significantly compromised the load - bearing capacity of the columns, thereby posing a substantial threat to the structural integrity and safety of the entire resort complex.

Problem Diagnosis

Concrete carbonation initiated a chemical reaction that gradually neutralized the highly alkaline environment surrounding the embedded steel reinforcement. This neutralization process eliminated the passive protective layer on the steel surface, rendering it vulnerable to electrochemical corrosion. As corrosion products expanded, they exerted radial tensile stresses on the confining concrete, leading to the formation of cracks and subsequent spalling. Concurrently, the concrete experienced a reduction in compressive strength and an increase in brittleness, exacerbating the overall structural degradation of the columns. Given the complexity and chronic nature of these problems, traditional repair techniques, such as concrete patching and steel plate bonding, were determined to be inadequate in restoring the columns to their required performance levels.

Reinforcement Solution Selection

Following extensive deliberations among structural engineers, architects, project owners, and construction specialists, carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthening was identified as the optimal solution.

CFRP materials offer distinct advantages over conventional strengthening methods. Characterized by an exceptionally high strength - to - weight ratio, they can provide substantial load - carrying capacity enhancements without significant increases in structural mass. Their inherent corrosion resistance ensures long - term durability, even in harsh environmental conditions. Additionally, the installation process of CFRP systems is minimally invasive, involving surface preparation, adhesive application, and CFRP sheet lamination. This non - destructive nature of the technique is particularly advantageous for preserving the existing structure and minimizing disruptions to the resort's ongoing operations, thereby achieving a balance between structural integrity and operational continuity.
